Licensing Terms

Photography Licensing

Production stills and behind-the-scenes photographs from the films and documentaries of James Kicklighter are available for licensed editorial and commercial use. All photography is © James Kicklighter unless otherwise credited. The terms below apply to all licensing requests.

Editorial Usage

Editorial usage covers journalism, criticism, academic writing, and noncommercial news contexts where an image is used to report on, review, analyze, or discuss the work itself. Generally approved with attribution and prior notice:

  • Newspaper, magazine, and online publication articles about James Kicklighter or his films
  • Film festival programs, catalogs, and screening materials
  • Academic papers, dissertations, and classroom presentations
  • Podcast cover art and episode artwork for interview-format episodes
  • Book and journal chapters analyzing the work
  • Independent film criticism, review sites, and Substack newsletters
  • Documentary films and series referencing this work
  • Wikipedia and other educational reference platforms

For routine editorial use by recognized outlets, we typically grant a no-fee license for a single article, with attribution. We ask that you let us know which image you’re using and where, before publication.

Commercial Usage

Commercial usage covers any context where an image is used to sell a product, promote a brand, or generate revenue for a third party. This includes, but isn’t limited to, advertising, sponsored content, marketing materials, brand campaigns, merchandise, packaging, AI training datasets, and stock photography resale.

Commercial use of any image on this site requires a paid license and a written agreement. We do not grant blanket commercial rights. Each commercial request is reviewed individually and licensed for a specific use, term, territory, and medium.

If you’re a brand, agency, ad network, AI company, or stock licensing platform, please reach out directly with a specific proposal. We do not respond to bulk licensing inquiries that don’t specify intended usage.

What’s Included in an Editorial License

A standard no-fee editorial license, once granted, includes:

  • The right to publish the image once in the specified article, program, or platform
  • Web and print rights for that single use
  • Online archive rights, so the image can stay on the article page indefinitely
  • The right to use a thumbnail or cropped version of the image for the article’s social-media share card and homepage promotion
  • A high-resolution version of the image, delivered by email, at the size your platform requires

What’s Excluded

A standard editorial license does not include:

  • Resale, sublicensing, or transfer of the image to a third party
  • Use of the image outside the specific article or piece for which it was licensed
  • Use as part of a stock photography library or image bank
  • AI training, machine-learning ingestion, or use in any generative AI dataset
  • Any commercial or promotional use, including advertisements adjacent to the image
  • Manipulation, deepfaking, or digital alteration of the image beyond standard color, crop, and resolution adjustments
  • Use of the image in any context that misrepresents the people in it, the films they represent, or the filmmakers who made them
  • Embedded or syndicated reuse across a publisher’s network without separate clearance

Use outside the granted license is a copyright violation and we will pursue it.

Attribution Required

All editorial and commercial uses require credit. Photo credit must be visible and adjacent to the image, in the same typographic treatment as other photo credits in the publication. The required format is:

If a specific photographer is credited on the image, their credit comes first:

For digital usage, the photographer credit should link to jameskicklighter.com when possible. Failure to credit is a breach of the license and may result in additional fees.
