Three films that defined me

If I could only keep three, these would be them. Each one rewired how I think about story, image, and time.

The film I cite when somebody asks why I became a filmmaker. Lumet and Chayefsky imagined the American media landscape as satire in 1976, and it has aged into accuracy. I have written about it more than any other film in my life, and I still think it is the perfect combination of story, performance, and cinematography.

I was 16 when I first saw this, and I was already a young filmmaker, which means I recognized William Miller before the film was halfway over. Crowe captured the specific anxiety of being on the road too young, learning a craft in public, and growing up under pressure that nobody around you understands. It is the only film about being a teenage artist that has ever felt true to me.

A masterclass in the four things every director is supposed to be in command of and almost none of us are: framing, lighting, pacing, and performance. Kubrick shot it by candlelight and held the camera still long enough that you can read his entire philosophy of cinema in any single frame. I return to it the way other filmmakers return to acting class.

Chiron is a shy, withdrawn child largely due to his small size and being neglected by his mother, who is more concerned about getting her fixes and satisfying her carnal needs than taking care of him. Because of these issues, Chiron is bullied, the slurs hurled at him which he doesn't understand beyond knowing that they are meant to be hurtful. Besides his same aged Cuban-American friend Kevin, Chiron is given what little guidance he has in life from a neighborhood drug dealer named Juan, who can see that he is neglected, and Juan's caring girlfriend Teresa, whose home acts as a sanctuary away from the bullies and away from Paula's abuse. With this childhood as a foundation, Chiron may have a predetermined path in life, one that will only be magnified in terms of its problems when he reaches his difficult teen years when peer pressure affects what he and many of his peers do, unless he follows Juan's advice of truly making his own decisions for himself.

A performance documentary in the lineage of Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Cutie and the Boxer, rebuilt around a subject the genre has rarely centered. The Sound of Identity treats transness as B story and artistry as A story, a structural choice that places it closer to classical artist portraits than to the issue-driven LGBTQ+ documentaries it is often shelved beside.

The documentary touches on chattel slavery; D. W. Griffith's film "The Birth of a Nation"; Emmett Till; the civil rights movement; the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Richard M. Nixon; and Ronald Reagan's declaration of the war on drugs and much more.

Fahrenheit 9/11

Michael Moore · 2004 · 122 min
United States · Documentary

Following up on 'Bowling for Columbine', film-maker Michael Moore provides deep and though-provoking insights on the American security system, the level of paranoia, fear, uncertainty, false values and patriotism, which all combined together to set a stage for George W. Bush to launch a war on Iraq instead of focusing on getting the real culprit(s) behind the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This documentary also focuses on how some Saudis were safely and secretly flown out of America while planes were ostensibly grounded after the attacks. Archived film footage, candid interviews with politicians, and an overall waste of public funds for a war that was initiated on false pretension to wit: a weapon of mass distraction - to take the focus away from the real enemy and get Americans glued to their TV sets to watch innocent Iraqis and Afghans getting killed. And a war that would eventually alienate the U.S.A. and its citizens from almost every country on Earth.
