THE AMERICAN QUESTION - Review | #GetThatMovie by HSC

[Clip from the film] "There's a powerful feeling in our politics that we are living at the end of something." "People are very fearful." "Things appear to be shifting under our feet." Reviewer: The American Question is a documentary by James Kicklighter, an exploration into the roots of American polarization and the search for unity amidst division. The doc goes deep into the heart of divided America, analyzing the factors that have eroded the trust in our neighbors, communities, institutions and government. The film takes viewers on a journey through an independent team's eight-year mission to discover the forces that shaped our now-divided society. Kicklighter highlights the worrying shift of the United States toward a moment of intolerance, something the experts see as a sign of the country's imminent decline. It tries to trace back the point at which America became so divisive. The personal stories gathered in swing-state communities in Pennsylvania and Michigan, plus the opinions of scientists and historians, uncover how economic shifts and the atrophy of local communities have fragmented the national identity. It really stunned me how often the dissolution of the American dream and its core values is mentioned throughout the documentary, and how often the them-versus-us ideology makes way for what some may consider a cultural civil war. The effort put into getting to speak with different people from all walks of life, just to get a glimpse of what they think is America's biggest problem nowadays, is remarkable. Americans, immigrants, young people, elderly people, big-city people, small-town people: their contribution is key to the documentary. But to me, the most important thing is that they get to speak with people on both sides of the spectrum. This helps in understanding how people look at the world through their experiences, and their experiences are all quite different. The American Question's cautionary exposé on America's increasing divisions excels at pointing out some of the country's most worrying issues, but it also goes the extra mile to try to find some realistic solutions. So I'm going to give it a nine out of ten. Thank you, guys, as always, for watching. The American Question is already available on multiple streaming platforms, VOD services and physical media, so if you happen to see it, please feel free to return to this review and drop a comment below.
