Savannah Location Scout

Director’s Note

This is the locations scouting document from the Savannah portion of the Desires of the Heart shoot. Photographs of every site we considered and ultimately chose for the Georgia-set scenes that bookend Kris's journey to India.

What this captures is the visual research that grounds the film in a real place. Savannah is not a generic Southern town in Desires of the Heart. It's the city where Kris lives, where Madeline died, where the cemetery scenes were shot, where the Lucas Theater marquee glows late at night, where the Pink House sits as the intimate dinner location, where Lafayette Square holds the final conversation before he leaves for India. Each of those locations had to do specific narrative work, and the scout was where we figured out whether the actual geography could carry it.

Pay attention to how these photos function as a working document, not a portfolio. The angles aren't pretty. They're informational. Where does the sun fall at the time of day we plan to shoot. Where can we put the camera. Where will the crew stand. Where are the practical constraints, the neighbors, the noise, the parking. A locations scout is the moment the script stops being theoretical and becomes a shoot day.

For producers and location managers reading this, the lesson is that scouting is part of writing. The bedroom looks different once you've stood in the actual bedroom. The cemetery means something different once you've walked it. By the time we got to set, every choice had been seen, photographed, and argued through. That's why the Savannah portion of the film feels rooted instead of staged.
